#iwill Fund (formally known as Youth Social Action Fund)

Big Lottery Fund and Department of Culture, Media & Sport have invested £20 million seed funding over four years to create the #iwill fund which is a national programme with some local distribution. London Luton Airport Limited are acting as match funders locally and the Foundation are awarding grants on behalf of the #iwill fund.

#iwill is a UK-wide campaign aiming to get 6 out of 10 young people involved in social action by 2020. Social action involves activities such as campaigning, fundraising and volunteering, all of which enable participants to make a positive difference to their communities and social action develops the skills and knowledge of young people that employers look for.

What does great youth social action look like?

Activities will meet six principles including:

  • Be youth-led
  • Be challenging
  • Have social impact
  • Allow progression to other opportunities
  • Be embedded in a young person’s life
  • Enable reflection about the value of the activity

The higher the quality of the social action, the more likely it is to benefit both the young people involved and the communities or causes they are trying to help.

We will prioritise projects that:

Seek to increase participation from young people from lower social economic groups and people who might not usually take part in social action, e.g. engage new volunteers.

Embed skills in young people / the wider community while delivering. For example, listening skills, maths and English, cooking, media and communications, evaluation and capturing success.

Clearly demonstrate principles of great youth social action. For example: an enjoyable project that enhances young people’s social lives, provides the opportunity to meet new people, positively impacts the wider community and develops longer term connections between volunteers and the wider community.

Have a plan to measure and report positive changes made.

Demonstrate sustainability beyond the life of this grant.
